A Cold February Night
The moon is hiding;
      only the big dipper is overhead
On a bitterly cold night in late February
      coyote howls carry long and eerily.
Dogs are silent.
Deer and skunks,
raccoons and possums
                           go unseen.
Danger seems afoot.
It's time for bed--
       no matter
           what the clock says.
