Fire came and,

like every efficient maid,

left nothing but a bit of ash

in what used to be the basement

but is now the only floor

of a place that is no more.

      III

The basement is once again a basement.

An I- beam is set and cross beams

            hold up a new floor. 

Walls are going up.

Soon there will be a new “Allen’s”

Lacking fire or catastrophe,

            the new building will last as long as the first.

Alas, the new store may not survive.

For while owners and county planners dithered

Dollar General built a new space to sell Corinthians

            Cheaper mayonnaise and,

perhaps,

                                    nuts,

 and bolts  of fabric
