A belated "present" to The Champ, Muhammad Ali, for his 72nd birthday

The Champ at Kutshers: Circa 1970
The All-Star basketball game was over,
when the real show began.
On a wagon piled high with hay
Muhammad Ali was holding court.
Profiled against the moon
Brown, and proud
and roaring loud,

“Joe Frazier ain’t gonna know what hit him.
I’m gonna float like a butterfly,
Sting like a bee.
I’m gonna hit him so hard
He gonna fly to the moon.
And when he come back down,
I’m gonna hit ‘im again.”

The fists moved
The Champ roared
and we all knew:
Joe Frazier
was soon gonna visit
Alice Kramden,
several times.

Time has passed.
But I remember Ali as he was that night:
sending Joe Frazier to the moon
he who was so big,
so proud, so impossibly loud
that no one could imagine
a day when  he would not be,
“The Champ.”
