Enough snow, let's "Play ball!"

Bright Light Dreams
Under bright lights each summer,
ball is played on River Road.
Boys and fathers have dreams there:
a first home run in t-ball,
an impossible diving catch in Little League
And suddenly
the boys are talking about playing for the Breds,
            like their brothers did.
Their fathers, meanwhile,
see them playing for the Reds.
But mostly these are dreams
washed away by the realities
of posted spring tryout results
at fourteen
or, if they’re lucky,
twenty-four.

Dinner

Dinner on the Moooo-ve
A round bale
Moves reluctantly
Towards the field
Where it is to be
Consumed.

Winter Storm

Winter Storm
Swirling, blowing snow,
fog, and below zero
temps
are all reasons to
stay inside,
sip hot drinks
and cuddle
under warm blankets.

Dusk

Dusk
Honking geese,
Not caring for the accommodations
Offered by our small pond,
Fly on.

View

View from a Bathroom
Through steam,
Cacti, orchids and glass
I see fog
Sitting comfortably
            awaiting the day.

Harvest Time

Harvest Time
Sitting in the nursing home,
looking out on a harvested field of corn
                        and the blue sky above,
I wander the fields of my childhood.

Hokey Pokey

Hokey Pokey
The snapping turtle patiently
endures Halligan’s play:
barking,
jumping in towards the turtle
 and back to safety,
until after one bark--
when the dog jumps too close--
the turtle
catches Halli’s nose.
The pit bull,
In pain,
Runs away.
And the turtle
Ambles across the expanse of our yard
to the welcoming confines of  tall grasses.
